Sindarov, Vaishali win 2026 Candidates Tournament

The Chess World Championship is held every two years, as a match between the defending Champion, and a Challenger determined from the Candidates tournament. Eight of the best players in the world are collected for a double round robin, and this year, the winners are Javokhir Sindarov (age 20 from Uzbekistan) in the Open, and Vaishali Rameshbabu (age 24 from India) in the Women’s.

Sindarov will challenge Gukesh Dommaraju, from India, who set the record as the youngest ever World Champion at age 18 in 2024 — yes, this is an unprecedentedly youthful match! Vaishali will challenge Ju Wenjun of China, who has been World Champion since 2018, now at the ripe age of 35.
