Edmonton has hosted lots of junior chess tournaments over the years. On March 1st, 2020, we held the first official St. Albert junior chess tournament since the 2009 St. Albert Chess Challenge, and had kids from multiple schools around the city participating.

Scholastic Chess Challenge

My favourite tournaments are the Chess Challenge cycle every Spring. These events have sections by grade, i.e. all the grade 1s play each other, all the grade 2s play each other, and so on.

It starts locally with the Edmonton Chess Challenge (or Calgary, or St. Albert), then moves on to the Alberta Chess Challenge a few weeks later. The winners of the provincial Challenge in each grade earn the right to represent Alberta at the Canadian Chess Challenge, organized by Chess ‘n Math and held at universities around Canada. 10 provinces have 1 representative for each grade 1-12, totalling 120 players.

I qualified for nationals 3 times, when I was in grades 9, 11, and 12, and travelled to Halifax, Winnipeg, and Quebec City.
