I frequently teach the very basics of chess, but beyond that my focus is on developing a sense of where your pieces belong on the chessboard. I also believe in the importance of identifying weaknesses in a position and coming up with ideas on how to continue.
Individual lessons are designed specifically for each player, but some time will be spent on things every chess player ought to know (strategic and tactical themes, endgame techniques, etc.) as needed.
RATES — I offer private chess lessons to both juniors and adults for the following:
- Adult : $40 per hour.
- Junior : $35 per hour.
- Plus : Add $10 for each additional person, eg. $45 total for two juniors together or $50 for two adults.
SPECIALS:
- ‘Rook Lift’ : A package of 5 one-on-one lessons for $175 (adult) or $150 (junior).
- 10-year Anniversary: To celebrate 10 years of teaching chess, ‘Rook Lift’ packages are $20 off until the end of January 2026 ($155 for adults, and $130 for juniors).

- ‘Opening Novelty’ : Your very first lesson is $20, for both adults and juniors.
Sessions of game reviews or training games (with review, if time allows) can be arranged for $25/hour, which will not include a dedicated lesson plan.
Please note there are no refunds for the ‘Rook Lift’ package after the first lesson. Also note that for the purposes of this page, ‘junior’ is defined as age 19 and under. ‘Plus’ plays off the $35 base for groups with at least one junior.
Lessons are done online using Chessable and/or Lichess. They will usually take place on weekends and evenings, and can be arranged regardless of location. To set up a lesson or ask a question, please send an enquiry to stalbertchess@gmail.com.
