Our in-school chess clubs run either during the lunch hour or for one hour after school, usually once a week for eight weeks at a time.

Details

  • Half of each class is spent learning new concepts and ideas and half is spent playing chess games on a board. To ensure everyone is learning something new, classes with returning students may be split into two groups for the first few weeks: learn first half/play second half and play first half/learn second half.
  • For beginning students, topics will include the rules of chess, piece value, basic checkmate patterns, and opening strategies. Experienced students will move on to tactical possibilities, additional checkmate and opening techniques, and positional concepts.
  • In-class practice will consist of games against other students in the club. At the conclusion of the course, every student will be given a rating from the Chess ‘n Math Association (see ‘Organizations‘).
  • Students who have demonstrated a good understanding of chess will be invited to participate in junior tournaments with players from other schools.
  • The school office will be asked to make an announcement as to where the club will be held just before the first class.
  • For lunch hour clubs, lunches that can be eaten quickly and cleanly are recommended on chess club days. Bring your lunch to chess club right when the bell rings! Classes will last the entire lunch and recess period.
  • Occasional homework sets will be given through the Lichess ‘Study’ tool, linked to via e-mail.
  • As with every activity, practice makes better! If students can find time to play at home during the week – against Mom or Dad, or a friend, or online – it will be very beneficial for learning and improvement.
  • The e-mail you provide will only be used for chess purposes such as event information and emergency rescheduling.
  • If you have any questions, please contact the instructor at stalbertchess@gmail.com.
