Want to learn how to play chess? Nervous about being one-on-one with the coach? Group chess classes offer cost-efficient, high-quality teaching in a comfortable environment.
Perfect for new to intermediate players, these classes run for six weeks (one hour a week) online using Chessable‘s Classroom. You will need to have a free Chessable account to participate, easily created at chessable.com/register .
In addition to direct instruction, all courses feature commentary on your live games by a master-level player: meet the instructor here. Join on your own or ask a friend to learn with you and get rolling!

ROOK-IE — Join us and learn the game of chess from the beginning! This class is for people brand new to chess or seeking their first formal education. Consider this a crash course to get you fully up and running. Topics include the full rules of chess, an introduction to openings, and basic tactics.
This group is roughly equivalent to the junior Novice club.
Cost: $75 for six weeks. $65 for parents of a junior club member. $55 for teachers.
$55 for second-time Rook-ie participants.
Rook-ie Winter 2025 — Mondays, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., February 3rd to March 10th
TOURNAMENT-READY — For players who already have some experience with chess. This course directly follows Rook-ie and is a stepping stone to Active Amateur. We will dive into the next level of strategy, giving you the foundation to be a tournament-caliber player. Topics include thinking ahead, fundamental endgames, and the secret behind piece value.
This group is the best fit for post-beginners, up to an online rating of roughly 1000.
Cost: $75 for six weeks. $65 for parents of a junior club member. $55 for teachers.
$55 for second-time Tournament-Ready participants.
ACTIVE AMATEUR — This club bounces around all kinds of topics, covering a different set in Fall, Winter, and Spring, and is aimed at the active casual chess player. We will start digging into the finer elements of chess, under the umbrellas of ‘Positional’, ‘Tactical and Practical’, and ‘Endgames’.
This group is best for those who are starting, or have started, to play chess regularly. It is recommended for an online rating range of roughly 900 to 1400, or to those who have completed Tournament-Ready.
Cost: $75 for six weeks. $65 for parents of a junior club member. $55 for teachers.

Classes require at least 4-5 participants to run and have an initial cap of 10 students each. A short assessment is available if you are unsure which group fits you best.
