The World Rapid & Blitz Championships end with a very familiar figure on top. Magnus Carlsen, victor of both in the same year for the fifth time, has reached a combined 20 World Championship titles between all formats (five Classical, six Rapid, and nine Blitz). For much of the blitz, he was not at his dominant best, and even at risk of not reaching the final four — as he described the win, “one of the very hardest-earned ones” — but it ended with Magnus doing what Magnus does, winning games that nobody else would, and finishing with strong victories in the semifinal against Fabiano Caruana (3-1) and in the final over Nodirbek Abdusattorov (2.5-1.5).
